Passage1
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rule of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliament. (世贸组织是全球唯一的处理国家间贸易规则的国际组织。其核心是世贸协定,由多数世界贸易国协商签订并经本国批准。)The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.
The WTO was born out of negotiations, and everything the WTO does is the result of negotiations. The bulk of the WTO’s current work comes from the 1986-94 negotiations called the Uruguay 【j??r?ɡwa?】 Round and earlier negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). (如今WTO的重头工作源于1986—94期间称作乌拉圭回合协定和更早的关税与关税总协定框架下的协定)The WTO is currently the host to new negotiations, under the‘Doha 【?d?uh?】Development Agenda launched in 2001.(目前的WTO是2001年启动的多哈回合谈判达成新协议的结果)
Where countries have faced trade barriers and wanted them lowered, the negotiations have helped to open markets for trade.(在国家遇到贸易壁垒并欲减少之时,协商谈判就帮助开放了贸易市场) But the WTO is not just about opening markets, and in some circumstances its rules support maintaining trade barriers --- for example, to protect consumers or prevent the spread of disease. It also means ensuring (确保)the individuals, companies and government know what the trade rules are around the world, and giving them the confidence(给他们以信心) that there will be no sudden changes of policy(即不会有政策的突变). In other words, the rules have to be ‘transparent’ (透明) and predictable(预测).
Giving them more time to adjust, there will be greater flexibility (灵活性) and special privileges(权利). Over three-quarters of WTO members are developing countries and countries in transition to market economies(过渡到市场经济). The WTO agreements give them transition periods(过渡期) to adjust to the more unfamiliar and, perhaps, difficult WTO provisions (以适应更不熟悉,或许,更困难的WTO条款).

Headhunters or executive search firms specialize in finding the right person for the right job. In some cases, the searcher firm may already have a list of people with the appropriate skills for the job(许多具备该工作所需合适技能的人). If this is not the case, then it may act as consultant , advertising or even organizing tests and simulations (模拟现场) to evaluate candidates’ behavior in order to select the most competent person for the job.

Dear Mr. Wang,
I’m writing to ask you to excuse me for not being able to keep our appointment. I do know that this is very impolite and must have caused you much trouble.
I do reckon that at present any explanation is pale and futile. However, I do not want you to misunderstand me. On my way to your office, an old lady suddenly fainted due to heart attack on the bus. I stopped a taxi and sent her into a nearby hospital. I stayed there until her son came, which spoiled our appointment.
I am aware that our appointment is of importance. I do hope that you would be kind enough to spare your available time to meet me.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely Yours,
Simon Lee
